3.5/5 ★ – JetDusk's review of Kirby: Squeak Squad.

I’ve heard a lot of discourse for this game in the past, so I came into it expecting it to be really bad. Much to my surprise, at worst it’s annoying or boring. At its best it’s pretty fun. I wouldn’t say any of it is particularly awful. The game is easy for the most part, but that’s expected with Kirby by the majority of people who are familiar with the pink puffball. I like the sprite work a lot, and being able to change Kirby’s color makes that collectible particularly worthwhile. The weapon scrolls are a neat idea but they’re horribly unbalanced. The power taken away makes some powers garbage until you find it or ridiculously overpowered when you do get them. The Ghost medals are neat, but too late in the game to be worth it. Only being able to hold 5 items at most could be seen as a detriment, but If it made for really good item management, it could have been an interesting bit of strategy. Sadly, you always want 3 spaces open since treasure takes up a slot, so strategy goes out the window pretty quick. My biggest complaint would be that the Squeak Squad aren’t used to total effectiveness. They annoy the player as they should, but there isn’t much more to them than Being short mini bosses. I feel they could have been given more roles overall, like maybe the one with glasses would want to test Kirby with puzzles. The fast one could have more official races. The big one could have competitions of strength with Kirby. Even Daroach could be more involved by coming in during stage bosses to buff them for a second phase or something like that. The game is really basic, but if you just need a quick Kirby fix, this game is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.
