1/5 ★ – JetDusk's review of Plague Road.

So, I’ve had this game since I first got a Nintendo Switch, back when there were barely any games for it and I just picked up stuff on sale. I actually have not played it until now. And I have to say, after about an hour, I was left a bit confused and very disappointed. The first bit of dialogue I heard was from Jim Sterling, which surprised me. Sadly it’s not the best performance, but hey, it was a small game from kickstarter, and he’s the only voice in the game (as far as I know at least). The art is the main appeal, a lot of the designs are cool and creepy, but it also works against the game in a way. When there are huge battles with about 10-12 pieces moving all around the board at once, it can be very distracting and hard to keep track of things with a bunch really detailed art pieces running around. This game goes from too simple to too complicated really quick. The UI is passable, but the fight introductions are really lack luster, and music is largely absent except for a few story moments. No battle theme or victory theme to pump up the player makes every fight really boring. It’s also bad when you run from 2 enemies, get caught by one, then after the fight immediately fight the other enemy because you don’t get invincibility to escape after an encounter. It doesn’t help there’s no real point to fighting enemies in this rouge like, no money and no XP, so every fight just ends up wasting time and resources. But it’s not like there’s anything to save up for rather than more random encounters, because I don’t believe this game even has Boss Fights. After a few hours of aimless wandering, just more bandits and wolves that don’t change things up too much. I even looked up If there was more after the first area, a great final battle to look forward to, but absolutely nothing awaits you at the end except a very abrupt and disappointing cutscene. Every reaction I’ve seen of it is overwhelmingly negative, and I don’t blame anyone for that.
