2/5 ★ – JetDusk's review of Project X Zone.
This is a game I’ve only beaten once before out of sheer determination. While the concept and visuals are a treat, the game suffers from its overall structure and length. I am not exaggerating when I say this game is almost the exact same thing for every level. It’s a 40 chapter game with maps that can take hours, but not from the tactical depth and thought that a strategy rpg would take, it comes from the endless number of enemies you fight with the same overdone combat animations from each new character you get. It’s impressive how boring the game gets by chapter 9, and as one of the few people to exist who have actually beaten the game, there isn’t much to talk about.
It’s cool seeing a bunch of Capcom, SEGA, and Bandai characters together, but a lot of fan favorites are locked in the late game. X and Zero, Chris and Jill, Jin Kazama and XiaoXiao, Dante and... Dimitri from Darkstalkers either appear in the tutorials or super late into the game. Sure you start with Chun Li and Morrigan, but most of my introduction to this game was characters from RPGs I am super unfamiliar with. I don’t hate that as it got me interested in a lot of different characters and franchises (there are a shocking amount of busty evil villain ladies in this game), but everyone except Telos were drawing a blank, and Xenosaga isn’t something I’ve played either.
A nice cast of characters with decent visuals and music leaves a lot to be desired with combat that works the same every. Single. TIME.
