4/5 ★ – JosephBlack27's review of Split Fiction.
Amazing game from a company that’s single handedly carrying the 2 player co-op genre.
Out of the 3 games of there’s that I’ve played; it takes two, a way out and split fiction, this is probably at the bottom of the list.
The top spot still goes to it takes two, due to being one of the most creative games I’ve ever played while also being the first. It was unique and also highly replay-able.
A way out was amazing too, due to also being creative and having fun moments of just messing around. But truely, the story itself is what makes it amazing with a memorable ending leaving us emotional and unsure of who to route for. Its unique play style also made this one stand out.
Split fiction, unlike the previous 2, did not have a unique play style. Not insulting the game or anything. It took what it takes 2 did, and expanded on it with more fun and creative scenarios that’s also a lot more action packed. However, the core game mechanics are still identical, with the boss fights sometimes making the game feel a little repetitive. SOMETIMES. Most of the boss fights were extremely creative. Like, an entire boss fight in a paper drawing world, or the last boss fight where one of us is inside a screen and the other has to stop around the screen to make things move. Creative. But the core aspects, once again, are still identical. Dodge incoming projectiles while eventually the big boss leaves an opening for you to attack.
This isn’t a huge Criticism by the way. I’m just trying to explain why it isn’t a 10/10 game, and why it’s probably the lowest out of 3 amazing games.
The plot itself was great, the characters and their growth was great, the levels creative and fun. That’s why it’s still an amazing game.
It’s just that, at the end of the day… if I had to choose to replay this or it takes 2 I’m easily picking it takes 2.
Another criticism is that it’s short. Which wouldn’t matter as much if the game had more mini games. Most the mini stories weren’t really mini games, but instead short side stories. Some had mini game aspects, but not enough. With more mini games be game would feel bigger.
Another criticism is making them writers instead of game developers. I get that maybe making them game developers would have been a little cringy… but it makes no sense.
I like writing. And whatever stories they’re writing has NO correlation to actual stories. They must have written their stories with a game adaptation in mind or something because… the progression of their stories makes no sense. “We ran from the trolls and had to parkour up a pole then do a front flip around. We then had to sneak past them by jumping from pole to pole that was being carried around by them”. I’m not a great writer… clearly. But you get my point right? The stories didn’t feel like things WRITERS would come up with. But rather game developers. Maybe the simulation changed things around or something.
Regardless. An amazing game. Highly recommend. The reason I mostly talked about conns is because everyone should already know the pros. I don’t need to be a broken record.
But.
The next game they make HAS to be in a new genre. They can’t make a similar game to it takes two again. A new game section with new mechanics.
Which does in fact sound like I’m asking a lot. It’s just that I want this company to succeed cause their games are amazing and they clearly have passion for this. But a 3rd game in a row with similar mechanics is going to severely diminish the trust fans have in the company and make it feel like a cash grab. Good luck to them. They have a very high standard to live up to.
