4.5/5 ★ – KERRA's review of Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition.
Right off the bat. I love this cast. They bounce of each other so well and are all such charming individuals. I found Yuri to be very much akin to other JRPG protagonists but also he was very unpredictable which i liked a lot. Also more games need a cool dog sidekick like Repede T.T
I also want to quickly mention the games great voice cast, as expected with Wendee Lee VA directing. Troy Baker suited Yuri so well and lent a cool air to his character. Eden and Sam Riegal ,Michelle Ruff and Julie Anne Taylor where all also great too in their respective roles
The story in the Tales game is usually decent enough to keep me engaged and this one was more or less the same. Though i feel as if the 3rd act didn't really need to be there as it feels added in post. Still it didn't hinder it much as the key plot point in that final arc was interesting enough
To say the game is gorgeous is a understatement. Without a doubt the best looking Tales game in my opinion. They really nailed a art style that still looks great now and will stand the test of time for a while longer. The colours just pop and the scenery and character models are just aesthetically pleasing to look at
Vesperia has such a fun battle system with a lot of different stuff you can do. I don't even think i touched a lot of it unfortunately. However some of my gripes lie here too like party AI being quite bad sometimes(Constantly knocking enemies over so they have invulnerability on wakeup) and being stun locked to death sucks a lot too. Still i liked a lot of the variety of moves and combo potential which made me want to try out new ways of playing
The OST was helmed by Tales series veteran, Matoi Sakuraba, and he doesn't disappoint here as expected. It has lots of fast paced battle themes, typical of the composer as well as some more delicate pieces for when things where more quiet
Overall the game has so much charm, it's hard for to me not like it. With a lovable cast of characters, rewarding combat and vibrant world; All these help make this a stand out JRPG
