4/5 ★ – KHFanXIII's review of Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD Collection.
As someone who only played the original version of Budokai 3 (and only did so when I was very young), I don't have much to say on this collection comparison-wise, but I will give a few thoughts.
Firstly, I am aware that they changed all of the music in these games. They did this because long-time Dragon Ball composer Kenji Yamamoto was accused of and proven to be plagiarizing a lot of his music. As someone who has heard a lot of his work, this is somewhat disappointing as his songs were pretty awesome. He plagiarized a lot of good shit lol. This isn't a huge deal-breaker, but it does suck to not have the actual original experiences of these games.
Secondly, this game had a lot weird aspect ratio things that make this feel like little bit of a rush job (likes a lot of HD collections were in this era). The gameplay itself, is presented in real 16:9 widescreen. As far as I can tell, no cropping was achieved to get this effect.
However, literally everything else is presented in 4:3 letterbox. Cutscenes, menus, you name it. I dunno why this is and assume it's because it was more effort than the time/budget allowed for, but it's still super weird. I guess I do prefer this to just cropping everything though.
The only other oddity is leaving out Budokai 2. Now I can assume this was done because Budokai 2 wasn't received very well and it'd be better to spend their resources getting the two games people did like up to snuff, but when you're missing an entire game your "collection" feels incomplete.
Overall though, ignoring those quirks, you're getting two of the best Dragon Ball games in HD, so I'd say it's definitely still worth a pickup.
