3/5 ★ – KHFanXIII's review of Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai.
Dragon Ball Z Shin Budokai is the first PSP entry of the franchise. I was fairly excited as I'm a fan of the Budokai games and wanted to see what a portable entry is like.
So does this game hold up to its console brethren?
Honestly yeah.
This is essentially a portable Budokai game and that's awesome. This is something that would've been so cool for me to own back in the day.
Story-wise though?? Ehhhhh
It's loosely based on the Fusion Reborn movie (and I mean LOOSELY). It is heavily expanded and stretched out.
This game does offer multiple pathways through the story, but it's not "what-ifs". It's just essentially 'what was this other character doing at this time?' Which is okay.
You so get some neat interactions like Kid Trunks and Future Trunks or Teen Gohan and Adult Gohan, but overall the story is just kind of meh (and also filled with a lot of spelling and grammatical errors.
One of the two endings does have a really cool fight of Vegito vs Gogeta tho so that's heat.
Overall this game is mechanically great, but as someone who actually plays these games for their stories, that aspect is a letdown.
