3.5/5 ★ – KHFanXIII's review of God of War: Chains of Olympus.

God of War Chains of Olympus is the first portable outing for the franchise, and honestly I'd say it's a pretty damn good translation. First bearing in mind, I played the HD remaster (speaking of it's still very obvious it's a PSP game) on consoles, but still this game is everything you'd want in a God of War game on the go. This is a full (albeit short) God of War experience on the go. I would've loved to have had this on my PSP back in the day. The gameplay actually transfers over pretty nicely. The story, is kinda meh, but you do get some cool new moments of character building and emotion out of Kratos, which is nice. I do have a few complaints tho. First of all, there is a lot of screen-tearing. It was immediately distracting to me so bad that I had to look up a solution. Now this is going to take a bit of an explanation so hold tight. The PS3, unlike most consoles, has its rendering resolution tied to the output resolution in some games. Meaning if you change your output resolution from 1080p to 720p, the game will then render at that lower resolution. And that is exactly what I had to do in order to fix the screen tearing issue. It doesn't completely eliminate it as I still saw it in a few cutscenes, but it is mostly gone after doing this. Another slight issue I have, is that the visual indicators for upgrades are gone. Like, in the previous games, as you upgrade your gear (such as your Blades of Chaos), they changed their appearance. This game completely forgoes that and they look the same no matter what level they're at. I'm not letting this slide just because it's a handheld game, even tho it's a pretty minor nitpick. My last issue I had with the game was the frequency of cutscenes. It felt like every few minutes I was running into another one and it felt like it interrupted the flow of gameplay to me. Overall though, if you wanted a God of War game you could have in your pocket, this perfectly fits that need.
