3.5/5 ★ – KHFanXIII's review of inFAMOUS.
inFAMOUS was one of the early premiere PS3 exclusives, that unfortunately, got a bit overshadowed by the multiplatform, similar game, called Prototype.
The inFAMOUS series is always one that I have appreciated being a large fan of Sucker Punch's previous series 'Sly Cooper.' Seeing them evolve and take things they learned from that series and implement into this new superhero, power fantasy is really cool.
The first game though, is a bit rough.
It definitely looks like an early PS3 game. Cole looks fine, but nearly every other character model in the game looks kind of bad, and everyone has such little animation that it's actually quite funny at times.
The gameplay is basically a third person shooter, but it's honestly pretty fun. Having electricity powers is always something I wanted to experience in a game, due to my fondness for the character 'Static,' so even while the gameplay isn't anything top tier, it is still very fun to me.
The experience of slowly getting more and more powerful in the game is really good. Starting out with only very basic powers and ending the game with being able to literally call down a huge lightning bolt made me feel like a God.
The framerate in this game (like most games on PS3) isn't great. It's 30fps in gameplay, that frequently drops below that. In fact, I'd say it usually doesn't even meet its target 80% of the time. I did notice it was a really smooth 60fps in the map screen, so that's interesting.
The story in this game, I think, is actually the highlight. It really hooked me and (aside from Zeke who was just an ass), all of the characters were really interesting, even if most of them are basically only voices in your radio.
The comic book-style cutscenes in this game are really a huge highlight. You can tell they have experience doing this before, and it REALLY looks like a motion comic in this game, which was great.
The twist (which I won't spoil) at the end is really great. I remember when I first played this back in 2011 and it blew my 12-year old mind. It was one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) plot twist I had ever experienced. I still think it holds up as being a really shocking (and actually well telegraphed) reveal.
Overall, despite being a bit rough, I still think inFAMOUS is entirely still playable and worth a look if you like superhero games like I do.
