3.5/5 ★ – KHFanXIII's review of Yakuza 5 Remastered.
Yakuza 5 is an interesting game. It is perhaps RGGs magnum opus on the PS3, packing so much content into it, it can last you for months. However, does it warrant its length?
Well..
Gameplay-wise, it’s pretty similar to the last game, aside from the addition of a weapon experience system. I didn’t really care for this and felt like it added nothing. I didn’t really notice much difference between a level 0 and max level weapon skill.
I actually do like this game, but I did feel it begin to drag towards the end. Yakuza 0 and Kiwami 2 are still my top two favorites. I just feel like the story in this game is a bit *too* long. There are quite a few moments that kind of felt like asspulls, and it did hurt my overall interest in the narrative. I also REALLY didn’t like how many betrayals/reveals there are in this. The final boss was really underwhelming for me because of this.
However, there are some fucking GREAT character moments in this, ESPECIALLY for Kiryu, which I felt got shortchanged in the previous game.
This is review pretty short, but I just don’t have much to say. The game is comparable to Yakuza 4, and would even be better if not for the overstuffed length of the story.
Overall, an enjoyable game, but not one of my favorites of the series.
