3/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Broforce.
TLDR:
It's a funny joke. But it tests my patience a bit too much for it to be hilarious.
Gameplay:
Broforce kites the line between a bombastic action filled power trip (like the movies it references) and ultra-hard difficulty (like the games that were popular in the 2010's). And I don't believe that these two ingredients mix. While it does have a ton of action to garuntee fun times for you and a group of friends, the actual game design leaves something to be desired. Most of the time when I died, I ended up feeling pretty salty about it. This is because you die in one hit, which is a pretty common gameplay trope within indie games. But the chaos that Broforce inflicts makes action very hard to follow and survive. There's explosions absolutely everywhere, and frequently explosions that chain into more explosions that are likely to kill you. When you start combating the aliens it gets even worse as there will be acid EVERYWHERE, which kills you if you so much as look in it's direction. The worst enemies are actually the basic ones who have no telegraphs to their attacks. The dog hurt box will activate and thats it. You're dead. It can get even more frustrating when you get to the bosses which are typically durable, hard to target and surronded by swarms of endless enemies. If you get a poorly equipped bro, you might as well not even try. Meanwhile, if you get a good Bro you can trivialize the entire fight. The problem? The bro you get is completely random. And you are constantly swapping between them when you don't want to be. I wish I had the ability to choose between three or so bros instead of being gifted a random one. Which depending on the map could only set you back. Especially if you get Bronan or something. Oh MAN. You also start every mission with one bro, so if its difficult right at the jump then get ready to die fast and wait through a 10+ second load screen to reset. I dont even think thats a big deal, but when you die unexpectedly and just want another chance ASAP, it kills a lot of your momentum and drive to keep playing. Hotline Miami and Celeste got it right. But maybe you wont have this issue if you play it on PC. I played one Switch and it ran very poorly. The entire final boss fight probably ran at 20 FPS. Not to discredit Broforce, it's still a decent time. And probably much more fun with friends. If you're into these types of action movies and don't mind some nonsense, this might be the game for you. But I think Broforce just needs a couple of changes to be really great.
Story:
America is eradicating terrorism, alien invasions and the demonic forces of evil all at once. The narrative is loose but quite funny. It's an All-American Bro-Out with your favorite action movie characters. Theres flexing, sick guitar solos and American patriotism. It's sillu but that's the joke. It doesn't take itself seriously in it's subject matter at all and instead pokes some fun at these tropes. There's not much to say besides its funny. And the ending is pretty good.
Graphics:
Visually, Broforce is fantastic. I love the small little block people made to resemble all these characters. They have enough detail to be instantly recognizable but enough style to still be lookin silly. The environments look great and have plenty of vibrant colors. Full screen CG's are always a nice treat between missions and when you unlock a new Bro.
Sound:
The soundtrack is a bit dissapointing because its a lot of drum heavy military and never evolves much further than that. There's the end of level guitar solo (which sounds very similar to the Power Rangers) and that's pretty much it. I enjoy the sound design at least with it's punchy sound effects. I also like how every enemy screams like Homer Simpson when theyre attacked. That always made me laugh.
Extra:
There's a couple of extra levels where you have to do some challenges and unlock some optional abilities / tools. All of these are pretty negligible and I found myself ignoring them mostly because they were either situational or not helpful enough. At least the Indiana Brones solo levels are pretty fun. I wish there was more. Honestly, I wish we had more succient levels where we play as one bro and the level is designed with that in mind.
Favorite Thing:
There is no tutorials at all. Broforce does a great job informing the player the rules and mechanics of the game, even if it is simple.
Not My Favorite Thing:
The face huggers. They latch onto you and there's no reliable way to get them off. So you just have to wait several seconds until they kill you. I wish you could melee them off or something. I don't know.
