3.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Cuphead.

TLDR: This game is so good, they should make a TV Show. Gameplay: It's like Punch-Out if it was a platformer bullet-hell. That's a strange sentence. Levels are short but tough, and since there is no health regain, gameplay is focused on learning a boss enough to get that perfect run. The bosses are fun, some a bit frustrating, some with the occasional janky hitbox; but fun none the less. You know what's not fun? The Run & Gun segments. I don't like them. I dislike them dearly. Especially considering that most of them have infinitely respawining enemies. But you need to do these stages to get the gear, which in itself sort of eh. A couple of items are cool but I found myself unwilling to experiment with most of them when I could just use Charge Shot and Smoke Bomb. Even 2 of the 3 superarts seem really underwhelming and could have used some kind of oomph. Story: Classic picture book story. I like how everyone becomes friends at the end :) Graphics: It'd be foolish to say that this game is anything short of masterpiece in terms of visuals. It doesn't just emulate the classic cartoons, it IS a classic cartoon. There is so much motion and character in the whole thing. I'm not gonna sit here and sing it's praises, it doesn't need it. It's crazy good. Special shoutouts to Saltbaker who attacks you by picking up anthro ingredients and shopping them up and they're so scared and I think they're dead. Sound: Again, a throwback to the oldies. The swing-jazz soundtrack is catchy is just fun to listen to. There's probably video essays about the music, watch that. Extra: You can find all the coins, get all the S-Ranks, P-Ranks, Achievements and upgrade the Broken Relic but that all entails fighring the same bosses over and over and over again and tbh, I didn't like it enough to do that. Favorite Thing: When Saltbaker picks up that pathetic little sugar cube and breaks it apart with a satisfying DONK. Not My Favorite Thing: No post super-move invincibility. Screen doesnt even freeze when you're doing it and many times I have taken damage immediately after a super move.
