4/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Dispatch.
TLDR:
Telltale games if they were written by Vivziepop
Gameplay:
Woah an actual game is here too. Every episode Dispatch has a management style game where you send your heroes on calls. Match their stats and discover their skills. This game is genuinely really good and a bit addicting. I think she should definetely add a secondary mode, like an endless mode or something. That'd be fun. Sometimes the narrative will add special effects to the day which is fun as well. It's a well polished mode with a ton of replayability for those going for multiple playthroughs. The hacking is also there to break up gameplay.
Story:
The script was clearly written by milennials [derogatory] who were very familiar with tumblr. Pop-culture references and all. And like I foreshadowed in the TLDR, every character is so vulgar and say fuck so often it can come of as very cringe. I'm being faceitous with the Vivziepop thing but there is a kernal of truth there. The setting is a silly Saturday morning cartoon style of Superhero world with "villains and heroes" split into two social groups essentially instead of being treated as criminals, with a concept of "Evil" or "Bad" being some weird binary idea that is deliberately chosen by people instead of a more realistic grey area. You have to suspend your disbelief a little bit here for many concepts and scenarios presented in game. For one, why did we only see Z-Team in the finale when there is at least a dozen more presumably capable Superheroes? Who knows. Don't think about it too hard. I may be critical of the script but I really liked the story, mostly because it's more of a work drama than a Superhero story, and it works best that way. When it becomes the Superhero story you knew it always was supposed to be I was like "damn i was lowkey hoping this didnt happen" but it still had enough twists and intrigue to keep me happy. And I will not pretend like the game isn't very funny because it is and got me laughing out loud many a time.
Graphics:
Game looks good. I like the intentional lower frame rate. Although sometimes the game switches between 60 and the "cinematic framerate" and it hurts my head.
Sound:
Critikal has his moments but Jack is actually pretty good. And I didnt even know that was Joel Haver until the credits told me. Honestly very good direction for the voice actors. I usually criticize overuse of Laura Bailey but she is also 100% believable in this game similar to Abby in TLOU2. I couldnt even tell that Matthew Mercer was there either. It's clear that the people behind this game were very passionate and into the characters. I like the main theme and the reprise in the finale.
Extra:
You can check out the alternate routes which seem to be fairly in depth. Check out the other romance option. Cut the other Z-Team option. Cool stuff.
Favorite Thing:
"I guess I just live here now"
Totally unique line I got from sending Golem out to a random dispatch that got him stuck in wet concrete or something. And I imagine there is many more of these kind of lines to find.
Not My Favorite Thing:
"We're all meat blobs on a floating rock with depression"
What? Fuck you.
