3.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Doom 64.
TLDR:
Hey man, I noticed you like Quake. So we put some Quake in your Doom.
Gameplay:
Remove the big open levels of Doom II. Remove the massive enemy counts. Remove the traps. Remove the silly city levels. Fuck it, remove the revenant and arch-vile too. We are back to Classic Doom claustrophobia and labarynthian design. I think Doom 64 is a very well designed game. Stages have identity without having annoying gimmicks. Great lengths and pacing. Enemy placement and variety. The whole 9 yards. There's even a lot of Quake style puzzles that involve shooting walls and switches that I don't believe were present in the original Doom duology. It's kind of like playing Doom 1 but with the super shotgun. Which can kinda show you how the super shotgun completely destroys balancing. I guess it did in Doom II as well. There actually is a new weapon though, The Unmaker. Which is...good. It does a ton of damage but fires slow. Throughout the game you can find 'Demon Keys' which upgrade The Unmaker to fire faster and fire more projectiles until it is an unstoppable killing machine. And you're going to need it because the final boss is pretty bad. The Mother Demon spams 4 incredibly accurate homing rockets that you cannot outrun, can find its way behind your cover and just generally piss you off. On top of that she sends out waves of flames that limit your movement constantly so unless you have The Unmaker, fighting her is painful. Or you can cheese her. Definetely ends on a sour note but I imagine it would've been fun if I had a fully upgraded Unmaker.
Story:
It's Doom bro, get real. The walls of text have been heavily reduced and I think that was a tragic loss.
Graphics:
I really dig the look of this game, more than the OG. The darker palette and different but recognizable designs of the demons is very cool. I feel like I'm playing some weird alternate version of Doom. Or like Majora's Mask.
Sound:
Probably the most controversial change, no metal music. Just ambient noise just like Quake. I get that it's supposed to be more horror themed but I would've perferred at least some music.
Extra:
There's bonus levels, lost levels and the demon keys to find. The works.
Favorite Thing:
Using the super shotgun against Pinky's has never felt better.
Not My Favorite Thing:
The Mother Demon.
