5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Dwarf Fortress.

TLDR: It's more than just a game. I said that for Minecraft but while Minecraft is a platform, Dwarf Fortress is the most interesting and robust simulation of anything I have ever seen. And it's still a fun game. Gameplay: How the fuck do I describe Dwarf Fortress. You know what. I'm not going to. Read the wikipedia page. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_Fortress And now that you're back. I cannot BELIEVE how much there is to discover and experience. I don't think there is a game out there that emergents their gameplay as much as Dwarf Fortress. The entire game is run on the stories created during your management of your foolish dwarves. Actually managing them all can be overwhelming at first but it's quite easy to learn and very intuitive once you get the hang of it. I have discovered, experienced and learned so much. And I still have so much to do. I have so many stories from my relatively meager amount of play time and I can picture playing this for a very very long time. Story: There is no story to DF, just the stories you experience and create in your unique world. I have so many tales to share and not enough people to share them with. My favorite story has to be the tale of the mischiveous rheseus maccau's. I had a fortress build very close to the surface and it had a recurring monkey issue. They would wander into my fortress, take a swipe at someone and cause a panic. My army would then intervene and destroy it, usually leaving monkey parts everywhere. Occasionally the citizen who gets attacked would personally slay the monkey themselves, strangling them to death while slamming their skull into the closest wall. Well one day a stonecarver went into a strange mood and took over a mason's shop in a remote corner near a staircase. While working on his artifact, the stoneworker was spooked my a monkey ran away, and fell down several flights of stairs. Injuring himself and even getting stuck. No matter what I did, he would not remove himself from the stairs. Eventually, he snapped from not creating his artifact and fell into melancholy. Mindlessly patrolling the fortress, until he went missing. Eventually, I found him dead in my farm. Graphics: I really like the graphics for the steam version, and the amount of sprites they have created for appearances, animals and the animal people is amazing. These artists were cooking and deserve the highest praise. Sound: The music is crazy good. Something about it fuels my imagination and perfectly fits the dwarven aesthetics. The main theme, Strike The Earth! and Craftdwarfship are personal favorites. Extra: Everything is extra. This game could probably entertain you til the end of time. Favorite Thing: Worm Man!!! Not My Favorite Thing: Sometimes the game can be boring if you make the safest choices. And to be honest, since you should get it if that's what you want. But something you should know if you're a new player is that the fun of dwarf fortress takes many forms, and losing is fun. So do not be afraid to abandon forts and try something new if you get bored.
