4.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of FAITH: The Unholy Trinity.

TLDR: Upon first completion I thought Faith was pretty good, not astounding. But I find myself thinking about it so much and truly admiring what Airdorf has done. Gameplay: Walk around and explore and have fun!! And there's demons and it's scary and I really like it. FAITH is narrative heavy so much of the gameplay is walking around, reading notes, experiencing story beats and moderate puzzle solving. The puzzles are very good. No real headscratchers but ones that make you think for a moment. The more traditional gameplay happens when you excorcise demons. Many of the demons have many attacks and patterns that you need to dodge while also pulling out your cross to deal damage. And it is suprisingly effective considering how limited the actual gameplay is. You encounter so many unique scenarios and demons across the trilogy, and they all feel incredibly memorable and interesting. Some of the later demons have demanding attack patterns and good puzzles to summon them. It really feels like you're sussing out a creature of the night to banish it. Story: FAITH has a fairly typical overarching plot of a Satanic Cult, the real meat is the backstories and details you can discover throughout the world. John Ward is an interesting protagonist whose mental state is more important than the impending apocalypse. There is a lot of standard 'movie moments' such as Father Garcia showing up with a shotgun at the last moment and stuff but it's fine. Bizarrely, I think the bad endings in FAITH are more interesting than the regular endings. The bad ending of Chapter III is one of the best bad endings I've ever seen in gaming. Graphics: Obviously, the visuals of FAITH will be the first thing to grab people. We've seen plenty of pixel horror games but nothing like this. This is below even 8-bit graphics. This is ATARI ASS HORROR. And it's good. I'm impressed with the amount of detail and atmosphere the game can give with these visuals. A real accomplishments. The second thing that is really cool about the visuals is the rotoscoped cutscenes. I mean, they're cool as hell. What can I say. Sound: FAITH has those old-school sound effects that really pack a lot of punch. But the most unique aspect of the experience is the Text-To-Voice dialogue which is unique, weird and also really funny. It's possibly the best creative audio decision I have ever seen in my life. The music is moody and spooky, and some of the more traditonal tracks are genuinely good songs. Extra: Getting all the endings is certainly worth it. The 'True' ending to Part III especially gives the game a proper finale that I think is worth your time. Favorite Thing: The drug trip scene has been in my mind since I saw it. Not My Favorite Thing: You move so slowly that it can be a real pain exploring. Especially if you get lost and you're just meandering at a snails pace trying to figure out what to do.
