5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of FIGHT KNIGHT.

TLDR: I love games where you can tell the creators clearly put a lot of passion, thought and love into it. Fight Knight is the game I wish I made. Gameplay: This game is hype as all hell. It's got that Punch-Out DNA mixed in with a dungeon crawler. I love Punch-Out because the fights are so dynamic and detailed, but I always wanted more out of it. I wanted to fight the opponents over and over again just to increase my playtime. This is what Fight Knight has done. Every enemy has a dance to do that you'll have plenty of opportunities to perform. Random battles also have numerous permutations (all with a punny names) to give you different fighting experiences with vastly different opponent teams. When you're not fighting you'll be exploring THE TOWER, which isn't just a padding distraction. The environments and puzzles found within them are very reminiscent of Zelda. And I was genuinly suprised at the time I spent trying to figure them out. Like Punch-Out, Fight Knight gets better the more you play it. The better you are, the more fun it is. I can imagine sinking TONS of hours into this. It's the type of "git gud" difficulty where I feel like I can become better and appreciate the game more because of it. This is assisted by a NG+ that has significant changes to the game to give players more to play. It's fantastic. I can't explain how good this game made me feel for attack, parrying and pulling off special moves. I'm glad that the special moves / armors and potions are never outclassed by different versions of the same thing. Every item is totally unique and does something specefic, offering a wide appeal to play styles. It's a blast through and through. Two thumbs up. Story: At the glance, the story can be compared to Doom. A silent knight making his way up the tower for unknown reasons destroying everything in his path. But the plot actually shows itself to do much more with it's characters. The entire setting is decently light-hearted. A silly and varied cast of characters populate the game. Along the way we find these endearing characters with their own quirks and minor story. Two of these characters are May and June, two bug lady sisters who are climbing the tower in search of the other. (And who always just miss each other). We see a lot of them and their dynamic, which is potrayed very well despite them only being together once in the whole game! Very impressive writing and dialogue found within Fight Knight. Later in the game we get more development on the Tower, the mysterious Prince and even Fight Knight himself which crafted an unexpectedly gripping storyline as I reached the games conclusion. It's also one of those stories that is even better upon revisiting, seeing minor details put together to fully understand what these characters are going through. Graphics: Incredibly visually distinct. 2D sprites in a 3D plane with a lot of bounce and motion in every animation. Every area has a color palette that changes to match the vibe, similar to something like Downwell. The 3D environments are pretty stunning despite it's low-poly natures. And I wish I could have a free reign of the camera to get a better look at the environments. The visuals can be disorienting to some people but I never thought it was too bad. You have to adjust a little bit, which I had no problem with. Sound: Fantastic soundtrack! The first thing I ever saw of Fight Knight was the trailer which has such a baller theme. And the rest of the soundtrack does not dissapoint. The battle themes are all catchy and upbeat of course. But even the out of battle themes are nice to listen to and have a unique gamey vibe. Highlights for me are the Cold Battle theme, Scrapyard Swamp Battle theme and the Graveyard Grove. The Graveyard doesn't even have bopping tunes but spooky ambient noise that is shockingly effective. It's a great change of pace. Extra: Like I mentioned earlier, there's a NG+ mode which makes significant changes! Something I wish more games did... There's also plenty of items to collect to spice up your playthrough and suit your own playstyle. And even more than that, you can use your accumulated loot to learn more about your enemies and get extra lore! So much to enjoy. Favorite Thing: The town is gaurded by these bumbling soldiers called The Night Watchmen and theyre ALL sleepy and need to wait until they take a big sleep first before they do anything despite being called The Night Watchmen. Not My Favorite Thing: The Polygonal Pugilist. On paper the armor sounds cool but it's the most disorienting thing ever.
