4/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Final Fantasy IV: Advance.
TLDR:
The Big One.
FF IV really amazed me. I really enjoyed the first 3 titles but IV felt like a true culmination of it all.
Gameplay:
At first I thought the ATB system wasn't going to be as fun but I've realize how it adds so much depth to the gameplay. Now battles can go in so many different ways and I love how different it plays from the others. Every character also feels unique and interesting to define them in gameplay as well. The playable cast is huge, and you'll be cycling through 10 characters before settling on your final team.
Bosses have different forms and unique mechanics. Octomammoth tentacles were cut off by Cecil's blade for example. Most bosses have some sort of gimmick or certain way to fight them.
Status effects are also much more viable and do a variety of different useful things, and because there are so many enemies with different weaknesses and resistances it's fun to try them all out.
Story:
The story is vast and expansive with lots of development. The best aspect is probably the characters who all have a distinct personality and voice. Big story moments are told through combat encounters as well to make things really interesting including interactive story battles like Cecil becoming a Paladin.
Graphics:
Very appealing looking game. Sprite work is very well done, spells look great. Always something interesting to look at but it's not that crazy.
Sound:
Nothing but BANGERS in this soundtrack. Boss Battle Theme, Red Wings, Melody of Lute, LAND OF THE DWARVES, OVERWORLD THEME, TROIA, ZERMUS BATTLE. NOTHING BUT BANGERS. ABSOLUTE UNPARALLELED BANGERS.
Extra:
There's a decent amount of extra dungeons and content to explore and unlock including extra summons for Rydia and other sidequests. Not too much but not too little.
Favorite Thing:
The Moon is a pretty fantastic area. It comes off as so barren and alien (haha)
Not My Favorite Thing:
Sometimes battle can lag with a lot of fast hitting enemies. There's some fights where you're just getting hit for 30 seconds until you can decide to attack.
