4.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Into the Breach.
TLDR:
I can easily see myself sinking over a hundred hours into this game.
Gameplay:
I originally wanted to wait until I was consistently beating the game to write a review for it. 30+ hours in and I've only won once. Even so I feel like I've seen enough to grant it a very good score. Into the Breach is a dream for lovers of tactical strategy. The depth of strategy this game gives you is phenomenal between the variety of squads you recieve and tactics you can pull off. Paired with the advanced content upgrade and you have hours upon hours of mastery to undertake. I feel like I haven't even dipped my full feeties into what Into the Breach has to offer. Every squad has immensely different strengths and weaknesses. And it is incredibly rewarding to figure out how to properly use them. Although I do gotta say, I feel like there's a lot of circumstances where the outcome is dependent on RNG. I've been put in many-a scenario where I simply had no counter measure immediately upon mission start. Moments like these are frequent and frustrating but somehow never stopped me from coming back. It also might be a "different strokes" moment as everyone I see online is able to play this much better than I can. That's fine. It's Alien Chess. You have to think ahead, choose what to sacrifice and be on your toes. I'm not very good at it but I sure do like it.
Story:
Story is minimal but present. You're an unnamed organization sending Mech pilots through time to stop an underground kaiju invasion. That's kind of it. But your pilots all have distinct personalities and lines. And some even have connections to other NPC's. It's worth trying out a new character just to see what they have to say about certain things.
Graphics:
I love the look of ItB. Little sprites on little battlefields. Simplistic and quick animation. It's all you need. No frills or flourish. Just high-quality pixel art to bolster your gameplay.
Sound:
Sound is pretty negligible. Most tracks are either very low or non-existent. I swear I've done most missions in complete silence. But this never bothered me. You're supposed to focus, so they're just cultivating a game that helps you focus. Sometimes I listen to something while playing and I instantly play badly.
Extra:
There's pilots to discover, achievements to unlock and new squads to purchase. All reinforce the mechanics of the game and bolster replayability. Although some of the achievements can be tough to get, they're fun to chase after until you get that one perfect chance to achieve it.
Favorite Thing:
The FTL crossover made me pog in real life.
Not My Favorite Thing:
Immediately starting a map by getting fucked.
