3.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Knights of Pen & Paper 2 Deluxiest Edition.

TLDR: This is how I remember the first game oddly enough. Simple and fun. It felt like a more full experience. Gameplay: Create your DnD party and journey through Paperos, fighting monsters, collecting loot and leveling up to stand up to The Paper Knight! Like the first game you play as the DM and the PC's. But unlike the first game there is a much heavier emphasis on scripted encounters instead of you having to build EVERY fight. This leads to more spontaneous and interesting battles over time and now that the enemies are buffed up to do more than one basic attack, battles are fairly interesting. Customization is fun since every weapon is unique / crafting is pretty fun so you can experiment with some builds. And it isn't ridiculously hard or unfair like the first game gets. It's a more relaxed experience and tries less to test my patience. Although...I don't know who decided that almost every room of the dungeon would contain a trap which is just a dice roll on if you get hit or not. Not even a lenient dice roll either. Other than that, it's a solid improvement from the 1st title. I would recommend if you are a big fan of RPG's. The DLC's are also pretty good but they are quite padded out. Story: The writing is a significant step-up from before. I actually enjoyed the dialogue between the DM, players and NPC's. They were quick, to the point and decently funny. It felt like a more realistic take on a group of people playing Dungeons & Dragons. It's also an in-game plot about a "clash of editions" which I think is way more interesting than "the game is real?" plot. Honestly the plot might be a highlight for me because it's light-hearted and engaging enough to make me want to read through everything. Graphics: Upgrade from the first game. It loses some of it's original charm with this upgrade imo but I'd be wrong to say that it doesn't look good. Sound: The music is bumping. I think developers underestimate how important their battle theme is but these guys got it this time. KOP&P 1 had a insanely repetitive battle them and only one in the entire game. It was way too frantic and fast-paced. This one is GROOVING, has an easy intro to get you into it and has a sick break down. The other tracks are also pretty good. Extra: Sidequests! That's it really. There's a beastiary that fills out with more information as you defeat enemies but that information is pretty negligible. Favorite Thing: It feels very genuine, as if I'm playing a real D&D game in a way. Not My Favorite Thing: Those fucking dungeon traps. Who let that happen. There's so many of them and there's almost no chance to escape them most of the time.
