3.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Mega Man X.

TLDR: Mega Man X is one of the most hyped games I've known about but never got the opportunity to play. 30 years later I've gotten around to it and it's good. Gameplay: Classic Mega Man run and shoot. Honestly if I was the same person around when this series was super popular I'd likely be a detractor of it due to fatigue I bet. If you think about it, they were releasing so much Mega Man stuff every year. Mega Man X and Mega Man were both going parallel to each other but they're the same gameplay wise...? It's not even like they have some slight gimmick to set them apart. It's pretty much just Mega Man but cooler. I guess there is the wall jump which adds a decent amount of new traversal. But it does kind of fall apart as soon as enemies are added to the mix. Prime example being that one section in a Sigma's stage where you need to keep climbing but there's a ton of enemies you can't properly target because they're above you and you keep sliding down and also getting hit which sends you down even further and even when you kill an enemy they immediately respawn as soon as their spawn point is off screen and it's just a mess man. MMX loves throwing enemies at you from above where you don't have a proper defense or jamming you in an unfortunate space that makes combat incredibly difficult. Big shoutouts to that one submarine subboss in Launch Octopus' stage for pissing me off for that reason. Other than those problems, I do like this. Combat is pretty fun for most encounters even if enemies are a bit tanky. Maverick abilities are fine. They don't have enough utility for my liking, but once you get the arms upgrade every weapon gets a secondary fire which I found to be too much investment to use more than once. Except for Chameleon Sting which makes you invincible. But for all my complaints, I liked it. I really did I swear. It's just one of those games where the thing I don't like are really easy to talk about and the things I did like are just basic game design things so sorry if I didnt gush. Story: I feel like I should have had the manual or something because maybe that would've given me some more insight to characters like Sigma and stuff. We don't see Sigma until the very end and he's kind of goofy looking and I don't really get what his whole deal is. This also might be one of the oldest examples of a forcibly lost fight that is used for story purposes that I've seen in gaming besides Final Fantasy 2. So that was cool. Otherwise, it's a Mega Man game. The term story is used very graciously. Graphics: I like. That's it. Sound: I remember those two songs that The Completionist uses for his intro and that's kind of it. Extra: You can find some secrets in the form of the X Armor Upgrades which is really cool. I guess that's the main difference between this and the classic Mega Man series. There's some minor gimmick. But this is a really good one. The dash is cool. The turbo charge shot is cool. The armor is SUPER useful. And the head piece is...less...cool. Favorite Thing: Flame Mammoth's Flame Thrower is godly. Not My Favorite Thing: Sigma Stage 1 is pretty bad.
