2.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Mega Man X6.

TLDR: Capcom is kind of messed up for this one. Gameplay: I think I've been damaged more times in one playthrough of X6 than the rest of the series. There is so much shit in EVERY stage flying at you and damaging you constantly. It's an actual strategy to face-tank damage for so many encounters because it's so much of a pain in the ass to deal with them properly. Especially if you're struck with the Nightmare, which adds an extra hazard which isn't challenging, just legitametely annoying. The worst one is Nightmare Darkness which gives you a headache inducing darkness effect on the entire screen and it's absolutely horrid. Also those Sigma Stages. They are a complete cluster-fuck. Especially that first stage, I dont know how youre supposed to do that without the Shadow Armor. Speaking of the armors, you start with the Falcon Armor which is fine. And you once again have two armors to unlock the Blade Armor and Shadow Armor. The Blade Armor is a bit underwhelming as it doesn't really feel like it improves your saber and instead just gives you a charge attack. And the Shadow Armor has a better version of that attack as well as buffing your buster shot and an amazing giga attack (plus spike immunity and a high jump for good measure). The Shadow Armor is sick as hell. Only problem? No sub-weapons. So I kind of just bregrudgingly use the Blade Armor when I would rather be using the Shadow Armor. Now lets move onto the parts system. Throughout MM X6 you'll be collecting 'nightmare souls' from 'virus' enemies as well as rescuing reploids throughout the stages. There's like 30 reploids in each stage and SOME of them have parts for you to equip. If a virus enemy attacks a reploids they DIE and are lost forever. It's actually not as common as you'd think but when it happens you just have to hope that it wasn't one that had a part. But you can't EQUIP these parts until you level up your Hunter Rank by collecting the souls but the threshold to getting the upper levels is absurd. You'll probably get to GA rank easily which allows 3 parts but then to get to the last two ranks you need 7000s more soul when throughout most of your playtime you'd likely accumulate 3000. So unless you enjoy grinding constantly for two extra item slots, avoid this. And despite all of this, I actually enjoyed X6 a bit more than X5. X5 is pretty boring and confusing. X6 is constant nonsense but its at least straight forward and there is the IDEA of fun in it. Playing as Zero isn't even that fun though in this one. Man. Story: There's a NEW virus. The NIGHTMARE virus. And I don't really know what it does but it's not great. I actually like Gate since he feels a bit unique compared to some of the other villains. I dont really know whats up with Isoc tbh but whatever. This translation is bad tho. It makes no sense that the 6th installment of the franchise has terrible localization when the previous ones were actually pretty solid. Graphics: Looks pretty good. Probably the best looking of the PSX trilogy. Big fan of the sprite work, colors and backgrounds. Sound: Sound is fine. I don't really care. The voices are in japanese now which eliminates bad english voice acting. Extra: Power-ups and shit and I don't care. Favorite Thing: X having the Z-Saber in his basic move-set is a game changer. Not My Favorite Thing: Both High Max battles SUCK. AND Infinity Mijinion.
