2.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Mega Man X8.

TLDR: A bit boring. Very sleepy. Gameplay: We are back to side-scroller Mega Man gameplay. And it's not great. The level design isn't really there. Most levels have some sort of gimmick that takes you through the stage instead of it being a traditional stage with a gimmick or two. Some gimmicks can be fun, like the simulation. And some gimmicks are awful, like Man-o-wars Rider Chase stage. X8 is a great game to mostly ignore what it throws at you. X himself has so many upgrades and items for himself. All the sub-weapons, two armors with their own play style. It's very cool but playing X feels redundant when you can play Zero or Axl instead. Zero is much more fast paced, you can really be in enemies faces and his special moves have no cost to them. Axl has super longer range and rapid fire functions at no cost as well. X has long charge times and limited ammunition. It does not feel good to play as X until you get a full armor set. X's sub-weapons themselves aren't even very interesting and some have weird animations you gotta sit through. But let's talk about improvements to Zero and Axl that make them playable again after X7. Zero is fast, tight and has good range. He can even unlock secret weapons that make this even better. Axl has a cool floating move, and his A-Trans is rapid fire and has normal damage. A-Trans is still generally pointless, but it's still an option. General upgrades are also back and can be found like traditional secrets instead of Reploid Rescue system. And you can fully upgrade all your characters easily as long as you take the time to grind. It's all fine, if not just a lil boring. But the most important part to me is that it's functional I suppose. Just wish it was more interesting. Story: Man I don't wanna talk about any Mega Man plot. It's SIGMA. IT'S BEEN SIGMA IT'S ALWAYS SIGMA. Graphics: Game look good? Like everything looks pretty good and has decent animations? Genuinely suprised. The FMV's are a little funky though. Not a fan of that. Sound: Music is just not there. It's so low and the only thing I can really make out are generic hard rock tunes that don't have much of an identity to them. The sound effects are fine, I don't really have any particular feelings towards it. Voice acting however is decent now. Dare I say, it could even be good. There is people speaking that sound like they are AWARE of what is going on and have been given direction. Amazing. On the other hand, a lot of voices from enemies are really annoying. Especially in Man-O-Wars stage. Extra: Theres those rare metals and upgrades. They're all pretty cool and are a positive addition but overall, not very interesting. Favorite Thing: Zero's Spinning Move is BACK. Not My Favorite Thing: They removed infinite continues, and it's not the worst thing ever but it's bad enough to piss me off.
