1.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Mega Man Zero.
TLDR:
I've decided that if you make all your upgrades extremely expensive and then making grinding a total pain in the ass then you deserve to go to hell when you die.
Gameplay:
Mega Man Zero is extremely primitive for a game from 2002. It's even primitive compared to the first Mega Man. It just feels like there's nothing to see? You get sent on various missions through the same locations and occasionally fight some bosses. When I think of Mega Man I think of a lot of abilities and upgrades to find, and that is just not the case here. Zero has barely any weapons or abilities. The element system seems underutilized. You can upgrade yourself using the cyber-elves but the game de-incentivizes you for using them and they are incredibly expensive. The game is super short and almost encourages you to mindlessly grind for some of the better cyber-elves. Grinding out crystals made up a half of my total playtime. Well why did I grind? Because the game is frankly too hard to not give me at least some kind of boost. I like challenging games but jesus christ, give me a break every once in a while. Zero is way too big on screen, can't we pull back the camera? The platforming and combat would be much better if I could see further ahead. And this level design man. Really nothing to the imagination. Straight lines, very little variety. And when they do mix it up it actually hurts more. Shoutouts to the log carrying reploids that contributing to most of my deaths. The one thing this game does have going for it is the boss fights. Very challenging but rewarding. And since Zero uses melee weapons it provides a much more active way to fight bosses. It's very cool but that's kind of it. There is just almost nothing to this game. I wouldn't be suprised if the entire thing was less than 100MB.
Story:
So Zero is back and the world is destroyed kind of? And reploids are still in danger of the mavericks and 'Master X'. But I don't think I ever understood why this conflict was really happening. It just is happening. The structure is super off because the game follows a random array of generic missions rather than unique stages modeled for a unique boss. So I was just playing normally and then I suddenly hit the end. I will hand it to them tho, I like Zero as a character simply because he is such a good constrast to X. He is very sure of himself and is genuinely pretty cool.
Graphics:
Yah the game looks good. I do like all the animations and designs. It could've done with more variety tho. Much MUCH more variety. The full screen art is cool tho.
Sound:
I...do not like the sound. The music is very repetitive and you will hear the same songs over and over again. The Reploid Base theme is kind of cute at first but it's so short and just keeps going and going. And it plays even when you return to areas after completing their mission. I listened to that song for over an hour and a half straight and now I can't get it out of my head.
Extra:
There is almost nothing extra here. I feel like I had nothing to seek out. Nothing to unlock. Nothing to make the game worthwhile to play for longer. Just time. Time to waste and lose forever. God...
Favorite Thing:
Splitting reploids in half with the Z-Saber is sick.
Not My Favorite Thing:
Zombie Reploid grab chain is absolutely unforgiveable.
