4/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Mega Man ZX.
TLDR:
Innovation in the Mega Man series is so rare that this game felt like a hot shower after a cold winter day.
Gameplay:
I was skeptical about a "metroidvania" like Mega Man game but I am a skeptic no longer. I like it a lot. Mega Man ZX is the longest and "fullest" mega man game I have played in a while and I really love how they went outside the box with it. I hear a lot of complaints about the map being bad and confusing and honestly, I didnt have much of an issue. The worst part about it is that it doesn't tell you if an area connects to another area unless you discover and the alphabetical organization they have going just doesn't make sense. But I just looked at a PNG map online and that solved essentially every issue. Gameplay wise it seems like your standard MMZ affair but they added different forms. And not those pansy Zero 2 forms, I'm talking completely unique and fleshed out forms modeled after the 4 guardians of the OG Zero games. They change your sprite work, weapons, playstyle. EVERYTHING. They're very interesting to use, encourage swapping on the fly and just play so well. Even the projectile only forms actually feel worthwhile compared to Zero instead of being overshadowed by him. Absolute genius move. Bosses are sick as hell. There's a weakness system that you can choose to exploit or you can be careful not to damage it too much and get extra energy for your new form. So many locations to visit, enemies to fight and even a decent amount of objectives to complete to give you some variety. I love it.
Story:
Capcom cooks with the new playable protagonists. Vent is a good change of pace from X and Zero, being a human who gains the ability of the legendary reploids. So we kind of get the best of both worlds now. Serpent is a fine villain, mostly absent from the game. I like the cast. The like the NPC's in both X-Base and C-City. Including that side quest of the dude REPEATEDLY sending letters to a girl who gets increasingly angrier with him.
Graphics:
WOO. Amazing looking game. Sprite work is top-notch. All the model forms look amazing. Great backgrounds. Even the FMV cutscenes look really good. Genuinely impressed.
Sound:
Bangers are BACK ON THE MENU BABY. After 4 ZX games that did not tickle my ear with banging music, we are back in full force. Every area has a unique theme and you hear more of it due to repeated visits! Making these tracks extremely memorable.
Extra:
There's items to find out in the world like a classic X-game. Subtanks, Health ups and the likes. But now there's also a bunch of sub-quests that have you do interesting little errands and frequently give you currency or new parts to upgrade your character with. Cool beans.
Favorite Thing:
The Warning screen and sound hits so hard.
Not My Favorite Thing:
Finishing a mission plays an annoying chime until you report it and it can be a little while before you're able to.
