2.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Organ Trail: Director's Cut.
TLDR:
This was more fun when I just messed around with it on the bus instead of being rooted down to my computer.
Gameplay:
I have played a lot of Organ Trail. I was a big fan of it during it's mobile era and it was the perfect game for teenager me to kill some time. When the director's cut was announced for PC it was an instant buy. But I found that when you're playing on PC, the game can get old pretty fast. Getting bored halfway through a run and wanting to quit is not a good sign for a rogue-like. In a way that isn't really Organ Trail's fault because The Oregon Trail is a boring game. It's entertaining for sure, but it is certainly not the most engaging or interesting game. And you can really see that when you get the same mini-game event several times within 10 minutes. Gameplay boils down to watching your car drive down the road and reading what events transpire. Sometimes good things, but mostly bad things. You balance your supplies and when you're low you scavenge, which is the same 40 second mini-game that you will be doing constantly. That's the game. Load it up for a laugh.
Story:
No story. The game is a parody.
Graphics:
The old Apple-II style graphics look really crisp for the gameplay sprites and menus. But it's also coupled with very attractive pixel art for other art and backgrounds that look really pretty.
Sound:
Very somber rock music. It's a vibe I never see and I love. The main theme is the best song in the game.
Extra:
Most of the unlocks are locked behind Endless Mode which can feel worse than the main campaign because there is no end in sight. You just have to play until you die or, more likely, your patience runs out and you start trying to kill yourself.
Favorite Thing:
The bit-crushed screaming is the funniest shit.
Not My Favorite Thing:
Many of the choose-your-own-adventure sections have no rewards, just punishments.
