4/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of PEAK.
TLDR:
"We gotta hop on new friendslop" -Jake
Gameplay:
It may be friendslop, but at least it's unique. Climb a big mountain, everyone gets the same map and there's a new one everyday. Wordle style. Find a route. Find items. Throw coconuts at your friends so that they collapse and slide down a cliff face. PEAK comes with many changes that make the experience way more tolerable than similarly styled friendslop games. One change being that the game is much more approachable than something like Lethal Company or REPO. Another addition is that you can still talk to your friends even when you die. Which is great because if you die you'll likely be waiting 10 - 30 minutes until you can be revived. And that's probably my biggest issue with PEAK, it's that these runs feel way too long. I understand that is sort of the point, considering when me and my friends reached the Peak for the first time I was scrambling and crying like I was really there on that mountain. I think Peak could benefit for a shorter more casual mode, perhaps just choosing how long your trip is would be nice. And also going through every area every time seems a bit much? It's already a rogue-like, when there are more areas why not just make it random which one you'll see? Or maybe have a path split and you can choose which one you'd like to go to. These really aren't big deals when considering it's easy fun with your friends, but still something to consider as your game ages to keep people playing and happy. I do think Peak is the type of game anybody should play tho, instead of me explaining why it's fun. Your experience will be mainly subjective based on your friends and your own tempermant. And I like a little fun and a little serious-ness, which is perfect for Peak. The game is packed with neat details and unique obstacles at every turn. Really neat additions include your partners having to pull thorns off of you and sometimes even ticks.
Story:
Lord of the Flies but instead of building society we are climbing that big ass mountain.
Graphics:
Cutesy cel-shaded graphics perfect for the vibe. The characters are adorable and allow for a decent amount of customization.
Sound:
Sound is good. No music tho.
Extra:
There are many achievements to unlock, which give you new cosmetics. And there's also an ascension system ala Slay the Spire which I am generally not a fan of. I just am not interested in getting 7 new difficulties of incremental difficulties. Why not just make less but more meaningful difficulty choices?
Favorite Thing:
Absolutely genius move of these devs was giving your characters a badge sash and adding your achievements to it as badges.
Not My Favorite Thing:
One time I almost solo-ed an area after all my friends perished. It was a grueling 15+ minute endeavor while all my friends watched. And it ended just because I interacted with the cursed skull which killed my instantly. Was that my fault? Possibly. Still, I was so depressed.
