3.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game.

TLDR: This is a good game! But kind of janky. Would it be as popular or well-recieved if it wasn't Scott Pilgrim? I wonder... Gameplay: It's River City Ransom. And it made me want to play those new River City Girls games...I still might. It's a well-done beat em up with a ton of variety in a short but sweet campaign with a decent challenge. Maybe too challenging sometimes. Before you grind up enough money to buff your stats enough then you might be dying and re-doing the early levels quite a bit. Which is unfortunate because they are the longest and least interesting ones. Once you get past that wall however you can pretty much steam roll your way through everything. There's 6 characters to choose (plus a secret one) but they don't differ much besides animations and vaguely different moves. You can also level up to get some more interesting moves but I had trouble pulling off some of them. Specefically the ground pound. I think this game could have benefitted from some kind of tutorial. Just a really small one. And maybe some small quality of life changes like a better overworld and pause menu. I also have SO much trouble with the Y-Axis in these games. It so difficult for me to simply move up and down in a timely manner and I feel like most of the time I whiff my shots because they are just slighlty out of my reach technically. I imagine this is much more fun to play with friends. But I didn't do that. Maybe one day. Story: The story takes more notes from the comic rather than the movie. Which was the correct decision as the book goes much deeper with it's locations / characters / locations and essentially everything. Of course, is there actually a story to follow along? No. Just go through the levels and kill the evil-exes. It's nice to see all the book characters in the background plus references throughout the game, and while it is the most rewarding for fans of the book, anybody else could probably enjoy it as well. Graphics: Whoever designed this game really liked voluptous women. The visual style is like Bryan Lee O'Malley's art style just leaped off the page and onto the screen. It's a very cute looking game with a great chibi / comic book vibe. There's a lot of recycle visual assets unfortunately. Many characters have the same face, hair or body. And that can feel a bit lazy but it's background NPC's mostly so. Eh. But I'm serious, there's bouncing boobs and curvy women EVERYWHERE. Why??? Sound: The music easily dominates. Anamanaguchi did so well with this soundtrack. Fast-paced and catchy chip-tune beats to get you into the mood. This game could be dogshit but the soundtrack would make me think otherwise. Extra: You can unlock Nega-Scott by beating the game with every other character. Which I am simply not going to do since the characters play so similarly. There's also some extra modes to distract you temporarily but other than that there is no bonus levels / sidequests or anything like that. There is a secret boss at least. That's pretty cool. Favorite Thing: Kim's summon move is kissing Knives and it stuns every enemy on screen, and some of them even have their own special animations for seeing two girls kiss. Not My Favorite Thing: This may be a me problem, but I just can't figure out enemy movesets for 2D pixel games the same way that I can for 3D games. Because there's much less frames of animation because it's sprite work I just have such a hard time determining when an enemy is going to attack.
