3/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Slice & Dice.
TLDR:
Chips in video game form.
Gameplay:
Chaos Game Design. Quantity over Quality is the design philosophy for Slice & Dice. While that sounds pretty bad, it's kind of okay when this game does it. There is so much shit in this game. All of it relatively equal in quality and fun, and low in impact. So there is a lot to see, but not much reason to see it. Every hero type has dozens of types to play as. There is hundreds of items. Tons of enemies. Way too many game modes. And it's all played in the same way. Roll your dice. Attack. Roll your dice. Attack. Strategize as much as you can. Roll your dice. Move on. It can get old fast. I was getting tired of it mid-way through a run. Typically encountered one of the several boss fights that mainly just spawn more enemies. It's a "chips" game. It's not about thinking hard, or having goals or seeking victory. It's just about playing the game and seeing what happens. You can't choose much of anything during runs, just try to run with the hand you've been given. Very frequently there is no solution and you will die or lose. And that's just part of the game. Just roll the dice, and see what happens. And you know what, it is fun. It's a lot of fun. But it gets old fast and is not very memorable. I just played Blasphemous and didn't like it very much, but everything about that game was more impactful and memorable than anything in Slice & Dice. But I still enjoyed the latter more. It's a weird game. You can get it on mobile, if you're into that. It seems like the perfect way to play tbh. Now some nitpicks. The UI is pretty bad. It's strange because there is a lot of care put into the game and then the menus just feel weird. It's a bit hard to navigate and can be quite confusing. The achievements / unlocks aren't even properly listed. Instead you get a small window of a random 5 locked achievements which is somehow less helpful. The Dice outcome seems to be determined by a physics simulation instead of a RNG simulation which can make dice rolls feel...strange. Especially when you can SEE the dice get fucked up from landing on top of each other.
Story:
There is no story.
Graphics:
The sprite work is very good. I enjoy seeing all the variations of the heroes as you level up and change classes. The designs are all a bit generic but they have plenty of detail and also have a great use of colors. I really like the kill effects on enemies as well.
Sound:
Is there even a soundtrack? I know there is but...is there? I can't remember a single song or tune from the game. It all blends together in an ambient-like track but it doesn't really have much ambience. And this game doesn't really have ambience to begin with if you ask me. The sound effectd are fine.
Extra:
Man. Everything is extra. A completely bizarre aspect of Slice & Dice is how there is no index for locked achievements. The game doesn't give you a full list of locked items, just a preview of 5 locked achievements. Which does help me let go of my completionist mindset since it doesn't even seem like the game wants you to gun for unlocks. But it really is just a bizarre choice.
Favorite Thing:
Dabble, Dabbler and Dabblest my beloved.
Not My Favorite Thing:
Lich skeleton summoning factory.
