4/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Spelunky.
TLDR:
An absolute all-timer, I've never beat it.
(I have beaten Spelunky for the first time about 3 hours before posting this)
Gameplay:
Always balancing the line between speedy action and careful preperation, Spelunky is a sandbox type rogue-like about hazardous navigation and dangerous secrets. There isn't a large amount of items to find, nor too much variety between runs but Spelunky has a real addictive quality that'll get you to keep coming back again and again. Spelunky is less about experimentation and more about practice, attempting to get that perfect run down, get all the secrets and defeat King Yama. The most random thing about the game is the layout of all the levels, all of which are completely volatile and inhospitable. That's the real challenge of Spelunky, trying to get your perfect run when you're pitted against the most fucked up level generation you've ever seen. But with careful planning and swift thinking, you can make it through anything. Eventually. Before you reach that point though you will be taken down by anything and everything in ways that feel like your fault and in ways that feel like total bullshit. Spelunky giveth, and Spelunky taketh. It's a tough game, definetely one of the tougher rouge-likes. But death is naught but a setback in these caves.
Story:
Them caves got gold in im. Also the rogue-like mechanics are cannon to the Curse of Olmec or somethin.
Graphics:
Yeahhhh, this takes me back man. No they're not amazing but they're damn good.
Sound:
Pretty bopping soundtrack. Olmec theme is iconic. Though most tracks are only about a minute long. Sound effects are really good. I enjoy the sound of the whip and the sound of ice in the Ice Caverns.
Extra:
You can beat the game normally or try your hand at fighting King Yama which requires a lot of steps over the entire run that may or may not be possible. I've never even been able to reach hell, let alone get the Necronomicon.
Favorite Thing:
Climbing Gloves are a total game changer.
Not My Favorite Thing:
What do you mean they removed the quick start button from the Switch version.
