4.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
TLDR:
I read a review that said "The best Star Wars game in 20 years" and I was like "lmao sure" but goddamn they're right.
Gameplay:
Fallen Order felt very limited in it's experience. Two stances, a couple of force abilities, and a small skill tree. Survivor has TRIPLED almost every aspect of this. 5 unique and interesting saber stances with their own unique upgrade tree. New force abilities that are useful. They removed the stasis ability which made Fallen Order semi-trivial and replaced it with a super ability that slows everyone down and even that gets upgraded. An entire new faction of enemies, tons of large and intimidating beasts to fight. And many more ways of traversing the land instead of just stasis puzzles. Koboh as a hub world is amazing since it's so much larger, is packed full of stuff and is seperated into sections to make it all easier for the player to digest. The town is also full of NPC's to talk to, trade with and get sidequests from which is what Fallen Order was desperately missing. And overall, the combat / exploration is just really good. It's fun to fight enemies and the enemy frequency and variety is substanstially enhanced. Sure, the gameplay can feel a little clunky when a bunch of tough enemies are swarming you but you can get through it with clever use of your force abilities. It's just such a bigger and better experience and I admire it dearly.
Story:
The story wasn't just good, it was REALLY good. Every character has more of a developed personality with goals and feelings. Dagan Gera and Rayvis are engaging villains instead of just another Imperial Sith. The story takes a lot of twists and turns and I feel like I got a lot of great development out of every character, even most side characters. I like the difference between the paths the cast took since Fallen Order and they're overall just more pleasant to interact with. Greez particularly got some nice treatment, making him such an awkward yet endearing family man. Great stuff all around and great performances from the whole cast. I'm excited to see how they will (likely) end the trilogy in the next installment.
Graphics:
Games look fantastic. Fallen Order didn't look amazing and was plagued with tons of visual and performance oddities. And while the performance still isn't great sometimes, I think the game looks phenomenal. You can fully customize Cal this time, and he's got some DRIP son. His hair and facial hair options can feel off since I feel like Cal's character isn't complimented by a buzzcut and a biker mustache. But I can customize him to how I want, and when I did, he was my ideal version of Cal and made my playthrough much more enjoyable. Also the alien designs are fantastic. I think a lot of media plays it too safe with their alien designs but Survivor got some wild designs. Turgle has the largest mouth I've ever seen and I love the Spamels.
Sound:
Great sound design and music. However, when I first started playing I hated how Cal sounded. To me it sounded like he was putting on a deep voice to sound edgier and older. I thought it was so cringe but eventually it went away. I don't really know if it changed or I just got used to it but it ended up being alright in the end.
Extra:
There's a ton of extra stuff in Jedi Survivor. Several varieties of collectibles, numerous sidequests, challenges and puzzle temples. And it isn't totally grueling to find all these small treasures around the world because you can get upgrades that point out all of these things on the map, making 100%ing the game pretty reasonable. My favorite was the bounty hunting sidequest which pits you against a ton of hunters and culminating in a secret boss and a great reveal that I thought would be cringe but it was actually so baller.
Favorite Thing:
"You're not here. You're not supposed to be here."
Not My Favorite Thing:
"Press the right stick and left stick to unleash Cal's inner darkness"
