3.5/5 ★ – Kalle_Deimos's review of Trepang2.
TLDR:
I came for F.E.A.R. 4. I left with DOOM.
Gameplay:
Doom-style arena shooter with a slo-mo. That's the short of it, and kind of the long of it too. Trepang is broken up into 2 types of levels. Traditional action shooter levels and then weird levels with some horror elements. The shooter levels are full of soldier enemies who don't really evolve over the game, using guns that are fun to use and a slow-mo that is way more balanced than the F.E.A.R. games. Gun customization is dissapointing, with a bunch of attachments that are pretty uninteresting and many weapons that can't be customized at all. The combat is fun but gets a bit samey, especially once you discover that slow-mo + certain weapons beat every single situation. High Value Targets are no different from the normal enemies. The Sword is a one-click win with no variety as well. The cloak is super short but is more about disengaging from enemies instead of actually being stealthy. The horror levels can be a bit boring with little enemies to fight. But that one level in the backrooms is really interesting and genuinely frightening.
Story:
0 idea what's going on. Finished the game. Still don't know what happened.
Graphics:
Trepang is a great looking game. The lighting specefically in certain areas is absolutely gorgeous. Certain things can look funky, like blood stains on your clothes and such. The art in the intel logs looks amazing.
Sound:
Pretty standard soundtrack. I do like the main theme from the intro and the whole "Raise Your Voice" motif that is repeated slowly whenever you interact with those drones.
Extra:
There's plenty of small unlockables to find throughout the game that might be worth your time. And you can check out the other difficulties which will let you fight certain mini-bosses but you aren't really getting that much more content unfortunately.
Favorite Thing:
After you disarm the bomb the laptop says "disarmed" and your hand is immediately cut off afterwards.
Not My Favorite Thing:
One of two games in my library that takes several minutes to load up for some unknown reason.
