2/5 ★ – KirbyHeeHo's review of Sonic Unleashed.

Specifically talking about the HD version of this game, I'd say most of the game holds up. This game is split up into two sections; day stages and night stages. Day stages are your normal boost Sonic stages while the night stages see Sonic the Werehog going through long as hell (30-minute stages) beat'em up stages. The day stages suffer from day Sonic's slippery and awkward controls but are fine otherwise while the night stages are mixed for me. The night stages can house some really good platforming challenges due to it being slower, but the problem with the night stages are the large amounts of enemies you'll have to go through and how long these stages are. Other than that, I kind of liked them. What totally killed this game for me were medals and the end of the game. First off, the medals. Medals are required in order to unlock levels. To make matters worse, the game expects a large amount of them. The only type of grinding that should ever exist in a Sonic game is grinding on rails. Next, the end of the game. In this case, I'm referring to the large increase in enemies in the night stages during the end, Eggman Land, and the final boss. So for the first part, levels just feel so padded out by seemingly endless amounts of enemies being added into night stages during the end of the game. These levels get so much longer because of the amount of enemies you'll end up having to fight during the end of the game. Next up, Eggman Land. This is one long level that took me about 80 minutes to beat. Do NOT die here. And finally, the final boss sucks so much because of how boring it is. There are long amounts of nothing going on during his fight and it's just plain boring. No amount of the orchestral version of Endless Possibilies could save this fight. To be honest, I did want to like this game because I felt that the game was hated because of the Werehog's inclusion, but you could not get me to do another full run of this version of the game. The redeeming qualities were probably the cutscenes, which portray the story and the goofy side of the game pretty well. I especially enjoyed Sonic and Chip's relationship in the game.
