3/5 ★ – Kisekio's review of CONV/RGENCE: A League of Legends Story.
I love this game a 4/5 amount but in reality I know it sits closer to a 3/3.5 score. That being said I do think there is a LOT to love here, but there are a few things that hold it back from being one of the greats in its genre
Pros:
Combat- the combat in this game is easy to use hard to master. And one of the things I really appreciate is how quickly it gave me the core tools to make it fun. One of my biggest irks with Hollow Knight is how long it takes to get the mechanics that make the game actually fun, but within 30 minutes I had Ekkos rewind, slow, ult, and projectile. These abilities are all extremely simple on their own but combining them can lead to some pretty skillful plays. This is much like Ekko in base League and I think they did an AMAZING job translating his abilities to this genre and is 100% why this game is so much fun
Progression- This kinda leads into what I was saying earlier but the game does a great job of pacing when you unlock things. I mean this both for combat, traversal, and aesthetic upgrades. I never felt like I went too long without gaining some sort of new trinket and this lasted the entire game
Art direction- this game just oozes style, while it was particularly fun for me to see characters drawn in a way they usually aren’t, I think non League fans would be able to appreciate the art regardless. It has a very vibrant color pallet and choppy style that is a delight to look at for the entirety of the game
Music- This is mostly for the bosses but the game remixes classic champion themes which keeps it fresh for people who are fans of the original music but still brings some unique jammers to the table
Traversal- The game lets you play with a handful of Ekko’s inventions that unlock over time making running around pretty fun. I particularly enjoyed the rope sliding
References: this is really only a bonus if you enjoy League lore but the studio clearly did its homework. They reference a lot of the lore that doesn’t even directly impact the gameplay or narrative. Was also very surprised to see a LOR character show up and I thought the Ascended scam ad was rly funny
Cons:
Writing: Ok sadly the writing in this game is just not good (and the mid voice acting doesn’t help either). It does have its moments but overall all the characters besides Ekko are extremely bland and if you’re a fan of League lore it’s even worse because they also butcher most of the champions that appear in the game, ESPECIALLY Camille and Warwick. Luckily this isn’t canon so it won’t haunt me forever
Enemies: There is a noticeable lack of enemy variety with both the bosses and standard units. The unique standard units are well designed but there is a million copy past color swap versions of em which starts to feel underwhelming towards the end. Same with the bosses. I LOVED the champion boss fights, but when it wasn’t like the 4 of those they repeated the “filler” bosses a lot and you also have to fight Ekko like 3 different times and even if he has different move sets it still isn’t as exciting as unique bosses would be
Map- God why, why did they do this. Instantly would have bumped the game up to 4 stars if they didn’t tell you exactly where to go on the map for every mission. Completely gets rid of the urge to explore. Such an easy fix would just be to show the general direction you need to go, whomp whomp
