3.5/5 ★ – Kisekio's review of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
I liked Witcher 3 but I don’t think it’s the holy grail of narrative rpgs like Twitter does. Its opening act does a great job of introducing you to the world of Witchers and most importantly Geralt’s relationship to Ciri. However, “act 2” is a bit of a mixed bag for me. It’s genuinely so long (30ish hours) that I thought this was just going to be “find Ciri” the video game. Which quite frankly is not a particularly engrossing plot. ESPECIALLY considering the group hunting Ciri is completely uninteresting as they are not explained at all until act 3 and just feel like a boogey man who needs to show up and destroy a village at predictable intervals. Of your 3 leads on Ciri 2 of them offer some neat monster hunting gigs that have their own somewhat more segmented plots that offer enough intrigue on a smaller scale (and some super cool player choice related outcomes), but Novigrad did not do it for me. No monster hunting just running back and forth talking to a bunch of characters that the game doesn’t properly reintroduce well for new players imo and throws in some half baked political drama. All to find a character that the game tries to make you think will have answers but I knew wouldn’t (and I was right) so that whole segment felt like a completely boring and pointless chore. Luckily there’s actually a huge chunk after you find Ciri (“act 3”) which provided much more interesting lore and very entertaining interactions with Geralt and his goofy aah family. Speaking of Ciri, she’s the best character and I adore her. Most characters, despite having really well written realistic dialogue, felt very static. Ciri was one of if not the only character that I felt had meaningful character development. Her gameplay was much more fun as well imo. Witcher 3 is way too easy which was frustrating for me. I won’t knock it for having mid bosses cuz that’s not the point of the game but I beat the game on death march difficulty IN THE ARMOR YOU START THE GAME WITH. And I struggled on ONE enemy. I actually think the tutorial was the hardest part. So when I look for a challenging experience (especially after having it been hyped up by people) and am met by painfully easy gameplay, that’s a disappointment. The skill tree is just broken op and amplifies the already OP quen spell which makes the whole game a cakewalk. I also got tired of the games “cutscenes” where u just watch the characters stand there and or do things off screen pretty quickly. I get y they did it that way, but it’s boring. At least in Cyberpunk you can run around while characters talk if you’d like. Music is an 11/10 genuinely it’s such a catchy and immersive ost. Also visually the game looks great for being near 10 years old. The Witcher 3 might not have aged imo as well as other games but it’s left me knowing there is insane potential for 4, which I am very excited to play. In the meantime I’m off to the dlc!
