4/5 ★ – Kruh's review of The Hex.
The Hex is an endlessly intriguing metacommentary about the frustrations of game development and the dichotomy between a developer's artistic vision and the player's expectation, while at the same time working as a sort of mystery narrative where the player tries to prevent a murder...or atleast that's what they think they're doing.
I should preface this by saying that the game is so much better on a second playthrough, as you begin to understand the characters and the non-linear events much better once you already know the basic structure. It's not to say that I didn't enjoy my first playthrough, but some of the gameplay felt pretty boring and aimless the first time around. I still feel that some sections, like the post-apocalypse part, go on for far too long, but the metacommentary is so clever and entertaining that it doesn't bother me too much.
There's so much good stuff in here, like how in Super Weasel kid you start floating around in good Steam reviews, how you see Twitch chat during the Secrets of Legendaria, and how the characters consciously exploit the games they are in, all of it culminating in a finale that left me absolutely speechless in how out of left-field it was. It was awesome!
I still don't think I fully understand the game, I have no idea what Sado is, but one thing's for certain: Daniel Mullins is the king of meta in the gaming industry right now! Can't wait for Incryption!
