2.5/5 ★ – LLCoolRunnings's review of FINAL FANTASY III.
I really struggled getting into this one. I jumped in right after playing through FFII, and found myself losing interest and dropped the game for a few months, just thinking I was burnt out. So I played some other games for a while and then came back.
This game just isn't interesting. It tries to be fun and quirky, but it's just kind of dorky. I've never been one to bully, but given the opportunity I would pants this game and push it in the pool.
The job system is the big selling point of this one, but unfortunately it's just not well implemented. The jobs are not all created equal, and many of them feel utterly pointless, especially as they unlock gradually through the game as you locate the crystals. I just don't see a point to make anyone a Ranger and start their job level from 1 when they will just be more effective staying with the job they already have leveled up.
And because of the job system, or maybe just a baffling choice made by the developers, your party members are completely devoid of any personality, so occasionally throughout the story, new characters with some kind of place in the world will join you for a while. But all they do is awkwardly lag behind you as you walk around, or give you advice on how to get to places after you've already gotten there, or without giving any context, so you're still left just wandering the map looking a new place you can go.
The most interesting thing in this game is its story, which doesn't really start until about halfway through, and also contradicts itself and doesn't make a lick of sense! I just think the fact that Dark and Light need to be kept in balance, and too much of either of them is dangerous is cool! And finding out that long ago, Light started to get out of control and so four Warriors of Dark had to step up to stop it is something I wish the game cared about as much as I do.
But lord the pacing in this is just awful. From aimless wandering and finding the first 3 crystals within just a few hours, then having to go twice that long before you find the last one, with the special optional dungeon literally 2 rooms away that makes those last jobs completely pointless by giving you access to the super jobs. Not to mention I was constantly finding new weapons and armor in dungeons almost immediately after purchasing them from a shop. Why are they available in both? I don't know, it just doesn't feel well thought out.
I did not like this game very much, and other than a couple interesting moments, it falls really flat for me.
Though I may revisit it to jump around as an entire team of four Dragoons at some point, because that was the only time I really had any fun, and I just think that's really funny.
