4/5 ★ – Lammy's review of Resident Evil Code: Veronica X.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica X post-completion review: Spooky Season! RE: Code Veronica is the only Resident Evil game launched originally on the Dreamcast, and was by all reports intended to be RE3 before an exclusivity deal on Sony's original Playstation shifted the honor of "numbered title" to Resident Evil: Nemesis and relegated CV to spinoff status. Code Veronica "X" was the Dreamcast version ported and enhanced for the PS2, and is also the version available on PS4 and 5. CVX follows Claire Redfield a few months after the Raccoon City Incident featured in RE2, RE3 and RE Outbreak as she investigates Umbrella Corporation bases looking for her brother Chris, still missing following the events of RE1. She is captured and thrown into an Umbrella-operated island prison, where a T-Virus outbreak occurs because of course it does. Narratively, CVX is an important part of the post Raccoon City downfall of Umbrella, while also advancing the plot of the more Wesker and bioterrorist-focused future entries; it's an essential piece of the RE story. That does come with some baggage, as CVX is a traditional RE game through and through, with tank controls, VERY limited resources requiring careful management, and a steep difficulty curve that may turn many people away. It's also more than 24 years old, and modern gamers expecting top of the line graphics and quality voice acting will definitely be left wanting. But, if you can accept a little retro in your life, Code Veronica is one of the stronger RE titles I've reviewed, with a strong story, engaging and spooky gameplay and a whole lot of charm. 8/10
