3/5 ★ – Lammy's review of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition post 100% Single Player review: I do not have the patience to try and play the multiplayer for this game in 2024, so no platinum for this one. Back in 2013, Square Enix elected to reboot its newly acquired Tomb Raider property for a modern age. Of course, 2013 was the end of the PS3/X360 era, so a "definitive edition" slight remaster was required to bring it to PS4/XB1 in 2014. In this game you play a younger, more untested Lara Croft, stranded on a mysterious island somewhere off the coast of Japan. She and her fellow shipwreck survivors must learn to fend for themselves and solve the problem of a bizarre storm that seems to be holding them captive. This game feels very Uncharted, ironic given that series' own TR roots. There's a lot of shooting from cover going on here, though Lara's weaponry lets you either be more stealthy or more aggressive if you want to play a little more freeform. There's documents and relics to uncover, hidden challenges, and tombs to raid in the open-ish world, though the latter felt oddly tacked on. The story was short but well written, and he game looks really good for a late PS3 game. The main problem is, the game's a mess. The PS3/360 version was notoriously buggy, which led me to drop it 10 years ago. The PS4/XB1 version fixed a lot, but also broke new things; there are now several predictable-but-uncontrollable crash points that can softlock the game and corrupt saves, all towards the end. I had back-up saves, which helped preserve the playthrough multiple times. If you like games that run well without hassle, this ain't for you. That's a shame, since when this game functions properly it's really good! Since it... doesn't do that, though, 6/10.
