3/5 ★ – Lancey's review of Saiyuki: Journey West.
I enjoyed playing this game back in the day. It introduced me to the Chinese folk lore which features one of the most rehashed character Sun Wukong. The story was very good as well, I had fun with the characters interaction with each other. The gameplay is turn based strategy, like the contemporary Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre (Playstation 1 enjoyed a plenty of good games from this genre), and it is a decent one. A couple of gripes; is that it seems as though frame rate is slow at times, it doesn't feel as smooth like other games in the same genre, maybe the programmers did not have time to optimize the game further for smoother animation or framerate, and also the battle field map can be too small at times, I know this could be subjective but I was a fan of Tactics Ogre that rather had bigger battle field to be able to maneuver a good strategy with positioning.
