4.5/5 ★ – Lord_Ghirahim's review of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
I thought that Miles Morales was an incredible spinoff title to what is one of my favorite superhero games of all time. While I don’t love this on the same level as I did Spider-Man, in many ways it’s a better made game and one I can see many people preferring. It made me even more excited to play Spiderman 2 and join the hype for the third title.
Once again, Insomniac tells another awesome spiderman story filled with amazing action, characters, and is filled with a lot of emotion. It is a much smaller scale, and I will say it took a bit to suck me in compared to the first, but it got better and better as it went on, culminating in yet another powerful ending. I love the journey we go on with Miles Morales, who is still a spiderman in training, learning what the responsibilities of having this type of power is. Beyond that, he has amazing dynamics with characters like Prowler and Tinkerer, I love how it incorporates the people of New York City compared to Spiderman 1, the rivalry between Roxon and the Underground is really cool, and the Christmas setting made this story somewhat festive despite the high stakes.
Moving onto the gameplay, while there was some small redundancy with the open world activities, it was definitely better handled here. My biggest complaint with the first game was how repetitive the random crime missions were, and in this game, they cleaned it up really well by making them not tied to district completion. Beyond that, the side missions were more varied and some very heartwarming, and I really loved the addition of the spiderman app to help other civilians. Outside of the open world, the new combat abilities, specifically the venom powers, I thought were awesome and really made fighting unique. I do miss the gadgets and suit powers of the first game, but the 4 gadgets here were solid. Stealth is also slightly more engaging thanks to the camouflage ability, which allows you to turn invisible and take down enemies in a sneaky fashion. Finally, the web swinging was just as fun. It still gave me the feeling of being spiderman, which is always lovely.
As far as negatives, I really don't have anything. For what this game is going for, it achieves excellently. I definitely prefer the larger scale and story of the first game, but this is definitely on the upper tiers of spinoff titles i have played. It is another amazing spiderman game that every spiderman fan needs to play, and I cannot wait to see how this series continues.
