5/5 ★ – Lord_Hazenberg's review of Enter the Gungeon.
This is easily one of if not my favorite indie game of all time. I have well over 120 hours and have beaten every single boss, secret level, modified run, & 8 character pasts. As well as unlocking nearly every weapon & item in the game, and all but 3-4 Steam achievements.
A game with surface level appeal that is much deeper than one would initially anticipate. An insanely addictive bullet hell & rogue-like formula where you just want to hop back in after every death. The task is simple; beat 5 procedurally generated levels, each with a boss, in a row without dying. Choose your preference of the 4 starting playable characters and jump right into the Gungeon. Through various conditions you can unlock 4 more playable characters, and even have access to 2 player couch co-op.
The first 4 floors/levels each have a pool of 3 bosses & a secret floor hidden within them. The fifth floor & secret sixth floor always feature the same boss. Once you obtain the items necessary to construct a special item, only then can you access each characters’ past. Where you will experience their backstory and fight a special boss. With a banging soundtrack to boot, you will hardly ever get tired of the repeated playthroughs.
It’s also filled to the brim with pop culture/gaming references in its weapons, items, character pasts, & even bosses. With the clear favorites of the developers being the first Metal Gear Solid and Dungeons & Dragons.
In conclusion, I cannot recommend this game enough. It’s only $15 and it offers hundreds of hours of content. It has so much more replayability than the plethora of “cinematic” AAA games that are regurgitated year after year. So if you’re sick of those overproduced clones, then do yourself a favor and Enter the Gungeon.
