3.5/5 ★ – Lord_Hazenberg's review of Sea of Thieves.
Your experience with this game may vary like with all pseudo MMOs. It’s a simple formula that is a blast to play with friends who also enjoy it. The gameplay loop is repetitive, so if you’re by yourself it can get boring fast. Or it can be a nice game to play in the background if you’re just talking with friends depending on how you enjoy said genre.
With cross play between Xbox, Steam, & Windows Store there is no shortage of active players. Updates are rolled out on a near monthly basis adding new quests, story missions, cosmetics, & sometimes new areas on the map.
It’s to be expected in this genre, but beware of griefers if that is a turn off for you. There is a PvP faction, but their ships are always marked on the map if you wish to avoid/find them. Anyone can attack anyone else at any time, so be wary of that especially when you’re doing map events that everyone can see.
The graphics can be gorgeous at times with a fun & colorful art style. Characters look cartoony & goofy, but they’re meant to be that way. Always being online does mean bugs & glitches are bound to happen. I’ve only come across a handful of game breaking ones, and those are usually patched quickly.
In summary, this is probably the best pirate simulator you’ll find right now. It’s more fun with friends, and for people who already like the pseudo MMO genre.
