4/5 ★ – Lord_Hazenberg's review of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.
I’m a sucker for retro FPS games, and Warhammer 40K: Boltgun kicks ass. It’s around a 7-9 hour game featuring a 3 act structure with 8 levels per act. Your arsenal of up to 8 weapons grows as you progress, but your inventory does reset at the start of each act.
The visual design really pops for a genre that can so easily get bogged down in brown & grey color palettes. Sound design is loud as hell to really give your weapons an air of punchiness. There’s decent enemy variety with 3 actual bosses that repeat throughout the game, and a final boss that goes from FPS to bullet hell really quickly. One of the devs had a stroke of genius in adding a dedicated taunt button, so you can hear epic space marine one liners while purging chaos heresy.
As for any criticisms, a basic map feature would’ve been nice. Each level has plenty of secrets, so a way to keep track of that would’ve helped. Combat has one minor nitpick as all enemies are leveled as well as your weapons. You’re encouraged to use weapons that are higher leveled than the enemies you’re fighting otherwise the damage can seem negligible. Some post story content would’ve been nice as well, but that’s not a huge issue.
TLDR: if you enjoy retro FPS then definitely get this game. It’s only $22 at full price, so don’t delay in bringing the god emperor’s justice to demon filth!
