!! WARNING SPOILERS !!
It has been a while since I beat the OG trilogy for Ace Attorney, and I set my next game in the series as this and GAA 2. I was a bit worried going in because it seemed like this game wasn't very good, and the sequel is where it shined. However, I am glad to say this game delivered. In fact, it tops even the first PW:AA game for me.
Case 1 starts very interestingly. We have to defend our character, Ryunosuke in court. Everything is built up well. In a short time, they manage to make this scenario a bit stressful. Then, the powerful Court is now in session music plays. That fully got me immersed and ready for the adventure. The first case also included little details in regards to the world building and set up a lot of intrigue. The new music was great, the animations were engaging and mesmerizing, and the quirk of the series was still there. Unfortunately, the trial did drag on a little. Overall though, the best first case in the series I have played so far.
Case 2 is the part I enjoyed least about the game. The setup for it was very interesting. We were going along with Kazuma to England on his journey to become a lawyer, and we were once again framed. The interest I had in this entire setup was bogged down when there were only 3 rooms you have to move back and forth between. This was really boring, and I felt like the dialogue was going on so much and the pacing was so off. Herlock Sholmes lowkey saved this chapter at least. The Dance of Deduction was really fun and figuring out other parts like the fact Kazuma had the bodyguard served up little mysteries.
Case 3 is where the game GOT ME INVESTED. First, we are immediately supposed to take care of this trial. We then learn we are facing the REAPER. He has an intimidating presence and nobody lives after his trials. This got me hyped, and defending Magnus McGilded was so cool. He was an interesting character and very charming in his own right. This also introduced parts of how London worked, and I really liked all the little details. The murder taking place on a carriage was also really cool, and I loved how ominious this entire trial felt. We also got to see the jury for the first time, and rummaging through the evidence and noticing strange inconsistencies got me super intrigued. Then, boom. McGilded is most likely the killer. THEN BOOM AGAIN. He dies in the flames. It was actually really insane. This case is really powerful and is such a fun case to follow knowing this is Ryunosuke's first ever court case. The story behind the trial and what goes on the trial is top notch.
Case 4 was a decent case, but it still wasn't that interesting. Being around London was kinda cool and talking to Herlock more was fun. It's nice to see him just being in random areas as you investigate the scene. I thought that the defendant was a bit too much. He had to strike his annoying ass pose every 2 seconds and it pissed me off. It was nice seeing how Ryunosuke had to put his trust in Natsume, though.
Case 5 is where the game gets back on track and lands on a great case. The investigation part of this case where we get to see Gina again was awesome. Living with Susato, Herlock, and Iris was so fun. It felt like a little family. The set up for the case with the manuscript was cool, and even having the little offices at the top of the building was cozy. The interactions with Benedict/Graydon at the Pawnbroker was fun, and I liked Windbaker (RIP). The Investigation portion might be top 3 for me in the entire series so far. The trial part was also really good, and it helped make things feel more grand. I liked all the moments going on in the trial like when you can see Tobias talking to Ashley, and then when Tobias is shaking one of the brothers. The brothers were actually funny and had a nice little character to them. I liked the morse code part as well and how it was actually revealed in the end. It got me really interested in what shit is about to go down. I also love that final scene where they are waving goodbye to Susato, and it felt bittersweet but I was smiling the whole time.
Some other things I wanted to mention. Herlock grew on me so much by trial 4, and I love his mannerisms and speech. Van Zieks is also a cool prosecutor, but I feel like we didn't really get to understand him in this game. I'm lowkey worried about the next game only being 5 cases because I'm not sure how theyll be able to fit so much in those 5 cases.
Overall, this game had a really cool story that connected all the cases together. I really enjoy this format of having the characters being built off previous cases and the journey of Ryunosuke.
Pros:
+ Great Soundtrack
+ Immersive Worldbuilding
+ Good characters and overall story
+ Good art and animations
+ Charming asf
Cons:
- Some parts of the game were a bit sluggish
- Was having some glitches until I downloaded a patch I found
