3/5 ★ – MalcolmBoyd's review of The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer.
Short and fairly sweet, The Incredibles Rise of the Underminer is a solid followup to the original movie, and the video game based on it.
I've had this game since I was maybe 10, and I never beat it because I couldn't figure out how to get Dug the robot through the robot attackers, and as it turns out, it's because that's the ONLY part of the game where you aren't meant to bash everything as quickly as possible. No, for one time and one time only, you have to bash something slightly later than you'd think! But not TOO late, because if you leave it too long you'll still fail. Oh well.
Outside of that problem (which is also down to me being a bit silly) this is pretty fun! I mostly played as Mr. Incredible, because his moves felt more powerful, but skating around as Frozone was also fun. Their respective voice actors do a great job, especially Mr. Incredible's, because they are NOT the actors from the movie. Had I not known that going in, I really don't think I'd have noticed, which is pretty impressive. Especially the guy voicing Bob, guy is a dead ringer for Craig T. Nelson! John Ratzenberger does return as The Underminer, though, and he is of course great.
I didn't like how many times they throw the enemies with homing missiles at you, they're just annoying. And trying to freeze them in time for Mr. Incredible to throw them back was just frustrating.
Probably not as big of an issue in two player, I'd imagine. Similarly, the big giant robot with the hammer attack also shows up too often for my liking, and the radius of its attack always seemed to be larger than I'd expect, so instead of getting bashed while trying to freeze them, I'd often just use a super move to finish them off more quickly.
Which isn't really a great sign for a game, I must say. Trying to get it over with as quickly as possible, especially considering this is less than 3 hours long!
But look, I think it's fun enough to give it a go, especially if you love the movies. For a long time, this WAS the incredibles 2, though it's of course no longer canon, which is a bit of a bummer.
