4.5/5 ★ – Manic_Zucc's review of Ōkami HD.

Okami is a game that snuck up on me over time. I knew going in that I would probably enjoy it, if nothing else than for the stunning visuals and music, but I became so gradually invested that I didn’t even realize how much I was growing to love this game. I was initially skeptical, the combat isn’t the most in depth and the games pacing doesn’t start off on a great note (there is A LOT of exposition in the beginning), but after getting through the initial section then Okami begins to transform itself into something special. Combat never gets too complicated, but certain enemies will be introduced that require using specific brush techniques or require you to exploit certain weaknesses. The enemies are essentially an extension of the game’s puzzles and many were quite enjoyable to figure out. The fact that most combat sections are completely avoidable helps to not make this aspect feel repetitive. The story, while not groundbreaking in its themes, is conveyed in such a charming way with likeable and well designed characters that really get you invested in what is ultimate a classic good vs evil story. I know Issun, your main companion on the journey, won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I found his arc entertaining with a really good pay off in the end. There are a few nitpicks I have. I wish there was more variety to the weapons. I also don’t love that you have to do the same boss fight against Orochi three times throughout the game (got serious Skyward Sword flashbacks from that). I also wish the game did a better job initially teaching you how to use the paintbrush. Almost every negative review I’ve seen for Okami reference the brush not working, but the game never tells you that there is an indicator for when your brush is in the correct position. I didn’t even realize this until after I had beaten the Spider Queen about 6 or 7 hours into the game. I doubt most gamers are that patient. Once I realized there was an indicator I never struggled with the brush controls again. In summary, play this game, especially if you’re a fan of the Zelda series. The feel of running across the plains while the epic score plays in the background was something special. Can’t wait to see what the recently announced sequel has in store.
