3.5/5 ★ – Marki3810's review of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
I really enjoyed my time with the Skywalker Saga. However, the more that I played it, the more flaws that I really took notice to. The first time playthrough of this game is an absolute blast, albeit with some dull moments like waiting for NPCs to walk to a destination. The pacing is quite bit faster than I would like but I really enjoyed that so much ground was covered from the movies, but sadly some moments were only in cut-scenes rather than be playable. The many hub worlds are packed to the brim with secrets and collectibles, but get tiring if you choose to actively seek out all of them. You may notice a pattern that this game does something good but with a caveat. After your initial play through and you decide to dig deeper in all the optional content, the cracks start to show.
Co-op is certainly a feature in this game. It's not very good. Unlike the earlier LEGO games, there is always a split-screen and is also does not change dynamically which makes sense since you have constant complete camera control. However, the screen is split vertically with no option make it split horizontally making the game feel claustrophobic. Also, especially during certain boss fights player two can only sit and watch while player one actually gets to have fun. Additionally, the performance gets cut in half when playing in co-op. Speaking of performance, the game ran very well on my system except in certain areas, particularly when lots of particle effects are present. For example, the Ewok village hovers around 40-50 fps when most of the game runs above 100fps. One more notable example is that the game chugs at 20 fps or less during the droid factory stage in episode III making it extremely awful to play though, especially in co-op where it runs even worse.
tl;dr
The Skywalker Saga is a very enjoyable experience for casual jaunt through but the cracks start showing when diving deeper in the game.
