3.5/5 ★ – Matt_TooFast4U's review of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.
This sequel very much kicks the everloving shit out of the original's ass, with a far stronger cast of characters with significantly more chemistry with each other.
The story itself is perhaps not quite as strong with a very predictable twist, moreso than the first game, but is presented at a far better pace.
Gameplay takes steps both forwards and backwards; trials are far more dynamic with the introduction of other characters striking down your points as you do to theirs, and the minigames are mostly more engaging, but the tutorials for how to play them are mind-bogglingly verbose and yet still explain NOTHING.
One big issue is the localisation as a whole. While the English voice acting is very strong, with a mix of industry veterans, smaller names, and one newcomer in their debut role (who steals the show), the script is very weakly translated from Japanese, with a lot of clunky phrases repeated ad nauseum, and jokes that don't translate at all left almost untouched, which hampers the experience. There are also typos absolutely everywhere.
Another big detractor is the massive libido this game seems to have, significantly moreso than the first. While the worst examples of this are fortunately skippable, the sheer amount of sexual content and dialogue is embarrassing, even by anime standards.
Overall, this is recommended to fans of the first game (and really, you need to play the first game to enjoy this) but if you were so-so on the first game, this one *might* be more to your liking.
