4.5/5 ★ – MechaniChris's review of Donkey Kong Bananza.
I’m not often pressed to 100% a game, but when a platformer is THIS much fun, and the collectibles are this satisfying to nab, I can’t help myself. I explored genuinely every nook and cranny of this game, and I know that because once I got the elephant Bananza, I could literally suck up the entire world. It is not only the best Donkey Kong game ever made, it’s easily one of the best platformers of all time.
If I had any criticisms, I would say the it gets mildly repetitive (though probably far less if you don’t try to collect every single thing) and the difficulty is probably far too easy for most of the game, especially compared to the post game when it becomes truly grueling. These are the most minor of criticisms however. I do also wish that destroying the bottom of an object made the rest of that object fall down, but I get why they chose not to do that.
Aside from just how much fun it is, it also has one of the best final acts in a platformer I have ever seen. The whole last story section is pure genius and I rolled credits with a huge grin on my face. Love this game, love this world, love these characters! Turns out the secret sauce to DK was to make him Wreck it Ralph (in more ways than one).
If you have a Switch 2 and HAVEN’T bought this game yet, what are you even doing?
